The Missouria Indian Nation
-
Description
-
In 1682 the two dominant tribes in Missouri were the Missouria and Osage. This article looks at the Missouria, who "ceased being an independent nation prior to 1795," and about whom little has been written. Father Pierre Marquette "was the first European to learn of their existence" in 1673. When Marquette asked his Peoria Indian guides who lived on the Missouri River, "they replied 'Mihsoori,' which in their Algonquin language means 'canoes,' particularly wooden dugouts." The name Missouri, then means "People of Wood Canoes." The Missouria people, however, called themselves "Nyut^achi which means "People at River's Mouth," and refers to the mouth of the Grand River. The Missouria lived mostly in Saline County. Includes references.
