Established in 1890, the school for girls was located at Harris (now Norledge) and Askew avenues near the Melrose Methodist Church. The school and church were founded by the Rev. Nathan Scarritt. Melrose recently celebrated its 120th anniversary.

Postcard image and short article about the Chace Public School and its namesake, former Kansas City mayor Charles A. Chace. Built in 1880, the school was located on Paseo Blvd. between 15th and 16th streets. It was razed in 1913 and is now the site of the Interstate-70 and Paseo interchange.

Neighborhood School Built on History

Postcard image and short article about the original Garfield Elementary School building at 421 Wabash Street. The school was constructed in 1884 and extensively remodeled in 1909. Some notable students who attended include baseball great Charles "Casey" Stengel and George Conover of the Conover Steel Co. Also mentioned in the article is a bronze plaque salvaged from the building before it was razed in 1961, commemorating the 231 Garfield School alumni who died serving in WWI.
