Effort to Restore School Revitalized
-
Description
-
Before her death in 2004, Lucille Douglass worked to restore the Benjamin Banneker School in Parkville, one of the first schools built for black students in Platte County. The project languished, but the "Banneker Restoration Committee, strengthened by reorganization and new members with expertise in nonprofit management and architecture, celebrated a small victory last week." It received a $10,000 grant from the National Trust for Historic Preservation's Jeffris Heartland Fund. Although only a fraction of what's needed, it "is a step closer to Douglass' dream."
