Excavation Offers Glimpse Into Clay County's Past
-
Description
-
The Liberty School District has plans to build a new elementary school near N. E. 108th St. but first must relocate graves found on the site. "This week, a team of archaeologists is undertaking the painstaking, by-hand work of moving [Mercer] Bush and 11 members of his family and slaves from ground tabbed for the construction of the Liberty School District's 10th elementary school, at 108th Street and North Eastern Avenue in Kansas City." Mercer Bush fought in the War of 1812 and moved to Clay County in 1835. The school district is paying for the grave relocation which will be about 100 feet from the original graveyard. The article gives no name for the original cemetery. Includes several pictures and map of site.
