Annetta "Cotton Candy" Washington, local blues singer, died December 25, 2007, at the age of 76. Her death was due to complications from a stroke. "She was a founding member of the Kansas City Blues Society...and was among the first women to be named an Elder Statesman of Jazz in Kansas City." The Singers, under the direction of Dean Robert G. Jackson, helped promote the music department of the University through their uplifting performances and helped preserve black spiritual music. The article profiles several former students of Western University which closed its doors in 1944.

The local music community is mourning the death of singer/songwriter Abigail Hope Henderson. During her music career Henderson performed with bands such as Trouble Junction, the Gas Lights, and Atlantic Fadeout. After being diagnosed with breast cancer in 2008, Henderson and her husband formed the Midwest Music Foundation, which assists local musicians in dealing with health care issues.
