Old KC Streetcars Could Find Rail Use
-
Description
-
A panel discussion on light rail in Kansas City was held in April 2007 sponsored by the local chapter of the American Institute of Architects. At this meeting it was mentioned that Ed Metka of Windber, Pennsylvania, owns 10 old Kansas City streetcars which were among the last to be purchased by the Kansas City Public Service in the late 1940s. These streetcars left this area 50 years ago and were used in Philadelphia until 1984. He suggested it would be nice for Kansas City to run these now. "Only Boston, New Orleans, San Francisco and Philadelphia have streetcars running that are original to those cities." These streetcars could be restored for around $1.5 million each. They would accommodate 45 people seated and up to 100 standing, going 45 mph at full speed.
