Native of The Netherlands, emigrating to Westport in 1847 and building the first brick hotel here called the Gillis House hotel. Troost Avenue was named for Dr. Benoist Troost.

Native of Holland (also known as the Netherlands) emigrating to Saint Louis in 1845 before moving to Independence, Missouri about 1846 and then Kansas City about 1847, building the Troost Hotel (later called the Gillis House hotel) with William Gillis on the Levee. Namesake of Troost Avenue and brother of noted geologist Gerard Troost (1776-1850) of Philadelphia.
