The YMCA at 10th and Oak streets has been closed from 30 years. It was razed in 1999 to "make way for Ilus W. Davis Park." David Byrd, who became president and CEO of the YMCA of Greater Kansas City in 2010 "wants to build a major Downtown Y to serve as the health and social hub for a revived city center." Five potential sites have been identified and residents of downtown and emplyees are being surveyed for opinions. At present, Kansas City has a small YMCA that opened in 1989 in a historic building in the Quality Hill district.
