Benjamin "Webb" Baker was a member of Company E, 25th Illinois Volunteer Infantry Regiment. He was involved in various battles and encounters in Missouri during the Civil War. His letters were written from such places in Missouri as St. Louis, Jefferson City, Otterville, Sedalia, Warsaw, Springfield, Rolla, Sharon, Forsyth, and Barry County. He also was involved in the Battle of Pea Ridge. From a Nov. 5, 1861 letter written at Springfield, Missouri he writes, "we have traveled, almost all over the state of Missouri since I left home. We have been [with]in one day's march of a fight 5 or 6 times but have not got there yet, & guess we never will. Price escaped from Lexington & came to this place when we again came up with him after a toilsome march of 120 miles".

Includes a picture of Julius White, in whose brigade the 37th fought.
