Chapter gives information on the Confederacy's or Sterling Price's raid in 1864 into Missouri. The raid culminated with the Battle of Westport and the Battle of Mine Creek in Kansas. "On September 19 a Confederate army of 12,000 cavalry moved northward from Arkansas. In command was Sterling Price, and with him were the hard-riding Missourians of Shelby and Marmaduke and the Arkansas troops of General James Fagan. Price was determined to make one final effort for the Confederate cause in Missouri."

Three cavalry raids into Missouri were made by Confederate forces in 1863. The fourth raid was led by Sterling Price and was authorized on August 4, 1864. "Sterling Price was the ranking Missourian in the Confederate army, a former governor, member of congress and officer in the Mexican War. He had had no experience with cavalry, although he was a veteran infantry commander." Article traces this fourth raid into Missouri with its climax at the Battle of Westport and the Battle of Mine Creek in Kansas.
