FishNet was founded in the mid-1990s by "serial entrepreneur" Gary Fish, who evolved the business from a small one-man operation to a large computer security company. Fish has since started two new companies: Secure Passage, a software spinoff of Fishnet, and a real estate group called FishNet LLC.

Saferstein is the great-grandson of Jacob Yeddis and grandson of Abe Yeddis, two generations of hatmakers who started the Kansas City-based Pioneer Hat Company in 1935. The company became Promotional Headwear International (PHI) in 1978 and Sportsman Cap Network in 2001. Saferstein joined the family business in 1993.
