George E. Powell Jr., who headed Yellow Freight System Inc. of Overland Park for nearly 40 years, died April 25, 2007, in Prairie Village, Kansas. The company, now known as YRC Worldwide Inc, is the biggest trucking company in the United States. "Powell's trucking career began in 1947 when he joined Riss and Co. In 1952, Powell and his father, along with a group of investors, bought Yellow Transit Freight Lines out of bankruptcy and moved the Oklahoma company's operations to the Kansas City area." He was also chairman of the Powell Family Foundation and in 1981 he and his sisters founded Powell Gardens near Kingsville, Missouri.
