Description: Macy's absorbed John Taylor's in 1947. The announcement of the name change from John Taylor's to Macy's was made on October 15, 1949, at a cornerstone-laying ceremony at the store. Macy's formally opened on October 17, 1949. The event marked the completion of two years of planning and actual construction that saw the expenditure of more than $7 million to produce a Macy's store more than double the old John Taylor's space, first established in 1881.

Title: George B. Peck Dry Goods Company
Description: The George B. Peck Dry Goods Company, 1044 Main Street (later known as Peck's) was formerly the Doggett Store Company, owned by John Doggett, who opened his first store in Kansas City in 1866. George B. Peck came west from Detroit in 1889 and bought a block of stock in the Doggett store and became active in its management. He served as director and vice-president before buying out Doggett's interest in 1893. In 1901 the directors voted to change the name to George B. Peck Dry Goods Company. Peck's closed early in 1964 after 77 years' operation.

Title: Pecks Store Front
Description: Listed under the title, "An Example of Improvement in Retail District," this photo appeared in the February 18, 1936, "Kansas Citian." It shows the store front with current fashions. The caption below the picture reads: "These new show windows installed by the Pecks store are representative of many such improvements in the retail shopping district. Investments in new facilities have reflected steadily improving trade conditions here and confidence in continued betterment of retail sales. The Pecks modernization program totals approximately $400,000. The Swenson Construction Co. is doing the work." Pecks was located on the northwest corner of Main and 11th streets. Formerly it was the Doggett Dry Goods Store, and in 1901 the name changed to the George B. Peck Dry Goods Company, and later simply called Pecks.
