Photos, illustrations, and information on the old federal buildings of Kansas City, doubling as post offices. First post office at 7th and Main Streets in the early 1880s, replaced in the mid-1880s in function with the Post Office and Customs House at the southeast corner of 9th and Walnut streets (also called the Federal Building and razed about 1932 for physical replacement by the Fidelity Building). Another federal building erected in 1900 with a dome on the east side of Grand Avenue between 8th and 9th streets, including a post office and demolished in 1938.

Landmark Courthouse in Makeover

Financing for the renovation of the historic U.S. Courthouse finally is in place and a Wisconsin developer, Alexander Co., is moving ahead with the project. The nine-story courthouse at 811 Grand Boulevard opened in 1939 and closed in 1998 when the Charles Evans Whittaker United States Courthouse opened. The building will have 176 apartments, parking garage, rooftop deck, a fitness room, and a community room with a home theater. "The four historic courtrooms will be preserved, but a use has yet to be identified...."

Second Federal Building in Kansas City, built in 1900, also housing the Post Office, at 9th and Grand Avenue. Had a capital design complete with dome gilded with gold leaf and rotunda. Building cost $900,050.47 and site acquired in 1891 for $451,578.33. Razed in 1938.
