Nicholas Jarrot and His Cahokia Mansion
-
Description
-
While the article describes the mansion built by Nicholas Jarrot, a French immigrant who arrived in America in 1791, New Orleans in 1793, and Cahokia in 1794, it also gives information about Jarrot and Cahokia. Older than St. Louis by 65 years, Cahokia was a center for the fur trade. Jarrot became active in the fur trade but also managed a general store and operated several mills. A sidebar, ??A Lewis and Clark Connection,? describes Jarrot??s involvement with the Corps as an interpreter who also ??granted permission for Lewis to build the Corps of Discovery??s 1803-1804 winter headquarters on one of his properties, along the River Dubois, near present-day Wood River, Illinois.?
