This collection contains items ca. 1832-1880s submitted to the Liberty (Mo.) Tribune for publication in the newspaper. They cover a variety of topics. Of particular interest are letters written from California during the Gold Rush as well as letters sent from along the trails to the west. Items pertaining to Liberty, Missouri, and the surrounding Clay, Ray, and Platte Counties provide a glimpse of life in western Missouri during the mid-nineteenth century.

William Swain's Gold Rush Account

Chapter II of the book describes the Missouri River portion of the start of the Gold Rush journey in 1849 as seen through the account of William Swain. Included are detailed entries of his diary and letters that he wrote back home. While in this area, he mentions the cholera epidemic, Independence, Missouri, etc. Swain was part of the Wolverine Rangers party that headed west to find their fortune in the gold fields of California.
