There is a building located in southern Cass County, Missouri, which was built in 1893 by Union veterans of the Civil War and is currently on the National Register of Historic Places. The building is owned by the First Baptist Church of Austin and they want to raze it. The Austin Township Historical Society would like to preserve the building. The building is referred to as the Grand Army of the Republic Building. It has also been called Stumbaugh Post 180 and Austin Community Hall.

View of a marker dedicated to known and unknown Black soldiers and sailors who fought in the Civil War in Woodland Cemetery in Kansas City, Kansas. The monument was erected in 1905 by the Grand Army of the Republic Sumner Woman's Relief Corps No. 22. The Inscription reads: GAR - Erected in memory of the known and unknown colored soldiers and sailors who fought in defense of the Union from 1861 to 1865 by Sumner Relief Corp. No 22 through the special efforts of the national aides [line obliterated] Cora S. Dameron.

The Woman's Relief Corps was the women's auxiliary group of the Grand Army of the Republic. It was established in 1883 as a social, civic, and patriotic organization to foster social improvements and to generate and sustain community appreciation for the sacrifice of those patriots who had died to preserve the Union. Among the Corps' activities were: child welfare work, such as school shoe drives; receptions for GAR dignitaries; and flag presentations to schools, clubs, and Old Soldiers' Homes.

Information provided in the book includes: name of soldier, age, birthplace, residence, occupation, entry into the service including date, rank, company, and regiment, final discharge, date of muster in the GAR, nature of wounds received and in what engagement, and remarks which often include a handwritten death date.
