Article chronicles the personal and professional dealings of Harry Truman and Thomas Hart Benton during the negotiations over the "Independence and the Opening of the West" mural located in the entrance of the Truman Library & Museum. Their disagreement over Benton's murals in the Missouri State Capitol is documented. The process by which Truman agreed to consider Benton for the mural as well as their friendship that developed as a result of the project is also discussed.
