Description
-
File contains information about the J. C. Nichols Memorial Fountain, or the J. C. Nichols Fountain, on the Country Club Plaza. According to information in the file, the fountain was dedicated on May 15, 1960. The statuary was sculptured in Paris in 1910 by Frenchman Henri Greber upon the request of Clarence Mackay for his Long Island estate. The Nichols family purchased the fountain statuary in 1952 from the Mackay estate and brought it to Kansas City. Restoration work on the fountain was done by Herman Frederick Simon, a native Kansas Citian. Laurence Sickman, director of the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art at the time, interpreted the horse figures to represent rivers which he thought were the Mississippi River, Volga River, Rhine River and Seine River.
