All That Jazz--On Film In KC
-
Description
-
Located at the American Jazz Museum is a wonderful collection called the John Baker Film Collection. This collection contains about 700 hours of film. "Some of the holdings are full-length features, some run as short as a minute; a core of the collection are the 3,000 or so 'soundies' - the 1940s forerunner of MTV-style music videos-featuring the likes of Count Basie, Duke Ellington and Fats Waller as well as a wealth of visual evidence of African-American culture. The films span the 1920s to the early '70s." Twenty years ago the city paid John Baker a Columbus, Ohio, lawyer, $200,000 for the collection. It wasn't until 2003 that the museum received a significant grant from the National Endowment for the Arts to help to preserve the resource. The collection is known and used by jazz researchers.
