Vaughan's Diamond Building
-
Description
-
Commonly called The Junction, the Vaughan's Diamond Building was built by Major Samuel D. Vaughan on lots 3 and 4 purchased in 1865 from Scarritt and lots 1 and 2 (for $500) in 1866. The building was completed in 1870 at a cost of $40,000. Vaughan's building was sold in 1872 to Howard M. Holden for $31,790 at a sheriff's sale. The Kansas City Times newspaper bought it in 1883 for $85,000. The Times put up another building on lots 5 and 6, that was occupied in November 1885. In June 1886 both buildings were sold to Nathaniel Thayer of Boston for $300,000 and torn down for the Westgate Hotel to open on May 15, 1916.
