Initiated by Chief Darryl Forte and Mike Schumacher, the program provides for nurses to staff Police Headquarters and treat inmates complaining of medical issues. The on-site nurse evaluations have cut down on the number of ambulances called to Police Headquarters and the number of escape attempts by inmates from ambulances, and have caught serious medical issues as well.

Profile on Janna Eikel, a detective who served in the Kansas City Police Department from 1984 until her retirement in 2013. Eikel worked in the vice unit and as a detective in forgery and robbery before moving to the sex crimes unit, where she "crafted herself a role as the department's first cold case investigator," taking advantage of recent developments in DNA technology. Her success in the position led to the creation of a department cold case squad as well as the establishment of the Jackson County Prosecutor's office cold case unit.
