-
Description
-
On September 27, 2010, Brad Regehr and his wife Wanda were the first to cross the new Christopher S. Bond Bridge (Bond Bridge) that replaces the Paseo Bridge. "More than 700 community leaders, politicians, engineers and contractors packed onto the bridge Monday to dedicate the span to Bond, the Republican U.S. senator who secured $50 million for the project and is leaving office after this term." The Paseo Bridge, which opened in August 1954, "will be taken down in pieces before October 2011." The Bond Bridge will be fully open by the end of 2010, six months ahead of schedule. A sidebar, "Bond Bridge: By the Numbers," gives these statistics: 40 lighted cables; $245 million for the bridge and wider interstate; the diamond-shaped supporting tower, 316 feet high; the longest cable, 540 feet; length, 1700 feet; 100,000 vehicles expected to travel the bridge daily.
