Obituary for author Shifra Stein who died at the Kansas City Hospice House (no death date given). She was born in Kansas City in 1940 and graduated from Southwest High School and Kansas City University. While living in Kansas City, she worked at Hallmark Cards and "was appointed as the first woman to be hired by The Kansas City Star as the Arts & Entertainment editor, writing reviews of area restaurants and concerts for several years." She wrote cookbooks and was the author of "Kansas City DayTrips" with the 15th edition of this popular local travel book coming out in July of 2008. She was interested in art and taught art classes at the Kansas City Art Institute. She leaves a son and family as well as husband Bob Barrett. Includes picture of her.

Bea Firestone Flam

Obituary for Bea Firestone Flam, former associate editor of the Kansas City Jewish Chronicle, who died October 17, 2008, at the age of 76. She and her first husband, Milton Firestone, took control of the newspaper from 1963 until 1983 when Mr. Firestone died. "As associate editor, Mrs. Flam wrote regular reviews of Jewish books, community features, and contributed many of the items and social notes in the popular 'Listening Post' column. She also created a column of her own called the 'Bee-Line for Women' . . . in which she wrote humorously of life as a Jewish mother and editor." The Firestones were one of the founding families of the Hebrew Academy of Greater Kansas City which later became the Hyman Brand Hebrew Academy.

Article provides a brief history of the Chindowan newspaper, published in Quindaro, Kansas, beginning in 1857 through at least 1859. The author of the article describes being given a copy of the February 19, 1859, edition of the Chindowan and provides the following list of topics covered within the publication: the Pacific Railroad, why Quindaro is not a river port, the county election ticket, European war news, and a John Brown story. The author states that the newspaper was established in 1857 by John M. Walden, who relocated to Ohio before the Chindowan ceased publication and eventually became a bishop in the Methodist Episcopal Church. It is written that publication temporarily ceased following his departure and that it was later revived by a group of investors.

William W. Baker, former editor and president of The Kansas City Star died on Sunday, January 24, 2010. The WWII veteran joined The Star in 1947 as a reporter, was named editor in 1967, and president in 1977. He retired in 1977 shortly after The Star was sold to Capital Cities Communications of New York. After retiring, Baker taught at the University of Kansas.
