Description

The hundredth anniversary of the original incorporation of Kansas City was observed in 1950. A number of activities were held, culminating in a parade and pageant in the summer of 1950. Starlight Theater was built to accomodate the pageant. The scrapbook was assembled by the Kansas City Centennial Association during 1949-1950. It includes primarily the newspaper coverage of the event and some photographs and memorabilia.

Description

"The Miracle," a religious pantomime based on a Christian legend, played in Kansas City from November 22, 1926, to December 11, 1926. The play was presented in Convention Hall which was transformed into a medieval cathedral. Many local people were utilized in the production, and approximately 88,000 people attended. The scrapbook contains primarily newspaper clippings that give thorough coverage to the stage production. The clippings feature advertisements, articles, reviews, feature stories, pictures, local business endorsements with ads, etc. The scrapbook has been photocopied and is available in that format.

Folder contains an early fold-out brochure entitled "Shepherd of the Hills Festival." It details the educational pageant presented by Lizzie McDaniel. The folder also includes a one page promotional piece detailing the attractions in the Shepherd of the Hills country, circa 1960. The vertical files in this collection were formerly a part of the department's regular vertical files.

Brief article on the performance of Blevins Davis' pageant play, "A Century of Progress," performed during the September 7, 1933 celebration of the newly remodeled Jackson County Courthouse in Independence. The eight-part, Jackson County-focused pageant featured 350 performers, and included the "spirit of the Missouri River talking with Time." Davis would later achieve international fame as a radio commentator and theatrical producer.
