Published in cooperation with the National Portrait Gallery of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., this book is divided into four sections: Land, Exploration, Discord, and Possibilities. Two essays, "Portraiture in the Photography of the American West," and "The West Is Rarely What It Seems," provide an overview of the impact of photography on ideas about the West and are followed by the four sections with the portraits. Most portraits are accompanied by a short biographical piece. Among the many featured in the book are John Brown; Francis Parkman; John C. and Jessie Benton Fremont; Quanah Parker; George A. Custer in is West Point cadet uniform; Levi Strauss; Jesse James; Robert Dalton; and Carrie Nation.
