The Make It Right Foundation (founded by Hollywood superstar Brad Pitt) and BNIM architects will renovate the former Bancroft School at 4300 Tracy Ave. that was closed in 2000. "The $14 million project calls for the existing 103-year-old brick school building to be converted into 29 affordable apartments with a 6,250-square-foot community center on the main floor." There will also be room for the office of the Manheim Neighborhood Association. "The entire project will be built to LEED Platinum environmental standards and marks the first major project to be built in the Green Impact Zone, which was designated and funded with the help of U.S. Rep. Emanuel Cleaver about two years ago."

Plans to renovate the Norman School at 3514 Street in the Valentine neighborhood are underway for Del Hedgepath. Hedgepath purchased the school from the Kansas City School District for $1.4 million in March and is planning to create the Norman School Lofts.

Arts High School Finds Site in Downtown KC

The Kansas City School of the Arts, scheduled to open in August 2008, is negotiating the purchase of two buildings in downtown Kansas City. The buildings at 911-915 Broadway are located in the historic Garment District and have an asking price of $4.3 million. "The three-story Hershberger & Rosenthal Co. building at 915 Broadway was built in 1909, and the five-story Jay & King Hat Co. building at 911 Broadway was completed in 1904." The performing arts high school is sponsored by the University of Missouri and will focus on vocal and dance programs. Includes image.

The Crossroads Academy at 1015 Central is set to open on September 4, 2012. The kindergarten through fifth-grade school will provide a "urban-steeped education" to 170 children. The opening of the school is celebrated by many downtown residents and advocates.
