A Church for the Ages
-
Description
-
October 2013 marked the 150th anniversary of the Second Baptist Church, "believed to be one of the two oldest black churches in Kansas City." The congregation was first established in 1863 by slaves and freedmen in an area by the Missouri River known as Stragglers Camp, in what is now Riverfront Park. The article traces the history of the church, including its previous locations and pastors, and discusses some of the issues facing the current congregation.
