Photos (of Ward and his Kansas City home) and chapter of the book about Seth Edmund Ward, or Seth Ward (1820-1903), "a runaway apprentice, a Rocky Mountain trapper, an Indian trader, post sutler at Fort Laramie, merchandising magnate of Nebraska City, and a patriarch of Westport (Kansas City, Missouri)." Native of Virginia moving to Independence, Missouri about 1838 and then to New Mexico with the Captain Lancaster Lupton wagon train as a fur trader, dealing with Kit Carson, Jim Bridger, and other mountain men (also operating as a cattle herder in Wyoming in the early 1850s) before settling on an estate south of Westport in 1871, purchased from the William Bent estate.
