In an effort to save it from demolition, members of Kansas City's Landmarks Commission voted unanimously to add the Wheatley Provident Hospital building, located at 18th and Forest, to the city's Register of Historic Places. Named after Phyllis Wheatley, it was the first African American-owned and operated hospital in Kansas City. The hospital building was dedicated on September 19, 1918, and remained open until 1972.
