The YMCA at 10th and Oak streets has been closed from 30 years. It was razed in 1999 to "make way for Ilus W. Davis Park." David Byrd, who became president and CEO of the YMCA of Greater Kansas City in 2010 "wants to build a major Downtown Y to serve as the health and social hub for a revived city center." Five potential sites have been identified and residents of downtown and emplyees are being surveyed for opinions. At present, Kansas City has a small YMCA that opened in 1989 in a historic building in the Quality Hill district.

Article on the YMCA of Greater Kansas City's plans to overhaul the city's network of facilities. The organization intends to build a new Y downtown to open in 2016 and renovate the Linwood YMCA at 3800 E. Linwood and the Atchison Family YMCA in Atchison, Kansas. The organization also plans to close three facilities that have been struggling financially: Independence Family UMCA at 14001 E. 32 Street; Richard C. Green Street Family YMCA at 10301 E. Missouri 350 in Raytown; and the 8th Street Family YMCA at 900 N. Eighth Street in Kansas City, Kansas. CEO David Byrd states the decision was made in response to a two-year review of the organization's operations.
