Ozark National Life Building
-
Description
-
Photograph, circa early 1980s, of the former Kansas City Public Library at 500 East 9th Street. Built in 1895‐97, the library represented a substantial expansion from its original location at 311 E. 12th St. In 1917, significant renovations were made to the building to increase the floor space and then again in 1933, when the art gallery - originally bequeathed by William Rockhill Nelson - was removed for creation of the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. At the time of its nomination to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976, the former library building housed U.S. Trade Schools. In the mid-1980s, the Ozark National Life Insurance Company purchased the building and as of 2018, was still located there. It was added to the Kansas City Register of Historic Places in 1988.
