Description
Article that explores the varying interpretations of George Caleb Bingham's painting, "General Order No. 11." The painting illustrates the effects of General Order No. 11 passed by Union General Thomas Ewing during the Civil War, which forced residents in rural areas of four Missouri counties to evacute in an effort to dismantle the support system of Missouri guerrilla fighters. Though he supported the Union, Bingham considered the order "an unneccessary abuse of of power." The author argues Bingham quickly lost control of his audence's discussion, as viewers began to use their own opinions of the war to interpret its meaning.
