Nicholas Aleshi came to Kansas City around 1900. He owned a dairy at 66th and Belinder and a grocery store at 312 Holmes. This collection contains correspondence, photographs, newspaper clippings, reports, business accounts, manuscripts, etc., of Nikoles Aleshi and his Virtuana Language System. Included are various items using the Virtuana language.

Mary Handly Linton was a local poet and author of books of verse. The collection contains both her personal papers and slide collection of approximately 3800 slides. Included with the personal papers are family wills, marriage certificates, death and divorce records, clippings, correspondence, photographs, as well as a rough draft of her book "On Wings of the Soul." The slides include travel slides and presentations, a general slide notebook, as well as slides of the Kansas City metropolitan area. Two of her poetry books are available in Special Collections (MVSC 091.98 L76O; MVSC 811 L761R).

The Youth Symphony of Kansas City was organized in April 1958, as an independent civic enterprise. The prospective members had to be recommended by their school music director or private music teacher. The charter states it was to be affiliated with the Kansas City Philharmonic, Missouri Federation of Music Clubs, the American Symphony Orchestra League, and the United States Youth Symphony Federation.The collection contains a number of different types of material covering the group's beginning and formative years, 1958-1970, including concert programs, newspaper clippings, correspondence, board minutes and budget reports. Other items include brochures, some of the group's publications, press releases, circulars/flyers, membership lists, a historical sketch, notices, photographs, and other types of miscellaneous items. Newspaper clippings provide coverage of the group's trip to Chicago in 1963, to Washington, D.C., and the World's Fair in New York in 1964, and to Barcelona, Spain, in 1969.

SC71 Kansas City Philharmonic Orchestra Scrapbooks Finding Aid

The Kansas City Philharmonic Orchestra began performing in 1933 and ceased in 1982. Beginning performances were held in Convention Hall. The orchestra's home for many years was the Music Hall located in Municipal Auditorium. Concerts were given in Kansas City as well as in states and cities in the Midwest region. The primary conductors were: Karl Krueger, 1933-43; Efrem Kurtz, 1943-47; and Hans Schwieger, 1948-70.The collection includes 41 photographs, seven microfilm rolls, and 35 scrapbooks. The majority of the scrapbooks were assembled by the Philharmonic's Women's Committee. Scrapbook contents include newspaper and magazine clippings, programs, invitations, photographs, publicity materials, brochures, newsletters, and ephemera. A notable feature of the Women's Committee scrapbooks is the art work adorning the pages done in chalk or ink. The contents include related activities as various fund raising events including the Jewell Ball, educational endeavors, performers both local and national, etc. All the scrapbooks have been microfilmed and are available for use in that format.

The Westminster Congregational Church, located at 36th and Walnut, Kansas City, Missouri, was dedicated at that address in 1907. It was initially called the Westminster Presbyterian Church but became affiliated with the Kansas City Congregational Union in 1901. The church closed in 1995. The collection includes seven scrapbooks, two church registers, and three envelopes of miscellaneous materials. Church bulletins, printed sermons, articles of incorporation, annual reports, pamphlets, magazine articles, and building fund material (1911) are in the collection. Numerous photographs are included, both color snapshots and black and white prints.

The Missouri Valley Historical Society (1913-1940) was the successor to the Kansas City Historical Society (1906-1913) and the Early Settler's Society and Historical Association (1896-1906). All these organizations focused on the history of the Kansas City area and the region in general. The Society was especially active during the presidency of John Barber White (1913-1923).The collection consists of official records, correspondence, and business records of the organization. Historical material may be found in vertical files, manuscripts, scrapbooks, etc. The collection also includes the papers of the Gold Star League which contains photographs, correspondence, and biographical sheets on soldiers of World War I from the Kansas City area.
