Athenaeum Club

Photograph of the Kansas City Athenaeum building at the corner of Campbell St. and Linwood Boulevard circa 1981. The building, designed by architect Samuel Tarbet and opened in 1914, serves was the home for the Kansas City Women's Athenaeum Club, which was founded in 1894 and focused on cultural programming for local women. With club membership dwindling, the building was sold to the Kansas City alumnae chapter of the Delta Sigma Theta sorority in 2015. The LaSalle apartment building, a 14-story building which served as apartments, a hotel, and senior housing and was demolished in 2001, can be seen to the east of the Athenaeum.

Photograph of architectural detailing on the upper levels of the Ambassador Apartments at 435 Knickerbocker Place, circa 1981. The building, called Ambassador A, and its twin neighbor to the west, Ambassador B, were designed by local architect Nelle Peters and were built by the Ambassador Hotel to serve as overflow guest rooms in 1927 and were later used as apartments. Both buildings were razed in 2012.

Athenaeum Club

Photograph of the Kansas City Athenaeum building at the corner of Campbell St. and Linwood Boulevard circa 1981. The building, designed by architect Samuel Tarbet and opened in 1914, serves as the home for the Kansas City Women's Athenaeum Club, which was founded in 1894 and focused on cultural programming for local women. With club membership dwindling, the building was sold to the Kansas City alumnae chapter of the Delta Sigma Theta sorority in 2015. The LaSalle apartment building, seen in the photograph with the name Defenders' Townhouse, Inc., was a senior housing facility at 922 Linwood. The 14-story building also served as apartments and a hotel and was demolished in 2001.

Photograph of LaMar's Donuts at 240 Linwood Boulevard, circa 1981. The building intially served as a garage and gas station, and in 1960 became the original location of the doughnut shop which grew to become a regional chain. LaMar's closed the location in 2003.

Janssen Place was established in 1897 as a private street and became known as "Lumberman's Row" for its large number of residents from the lumber industry.

Photograph of Browne's Market & Deli, looking southwest from the intersection of 33rd Street and Pennsylvania Avenue, circa 1981. The building was constructed in 1901 by Irish immigrants Ed and Mary Flavin, who relocated their store from its original location at 27th and Jefferson. The business continued under their daughter Margaret and her husband Jim Browne, and remained in business and within the family as of 2018. Browne's is one of the last buildings remaining on its block after a effort in the 1970s and early 1980s by the Kansas City Life Insurance Company to redevelop the area into an office park. Browne's also owns the adjacent apartment buildings visible to the left and right of the image.

Signs advertise the House of Chun Chinese restaurant and the adjacent Kon Tiki Room tiki bar. The area, south of Linwood Boulevard to 34th Street, between Main and Gillham, was deemed blighted and ridden with crime in drugs in the late 1980s, and these buildings, as well as other homes, apartments, and commercial buildings, were demolished in the early and mid-'90s as part of the so-called "Glover Plan" to be replaced by the Midtown Marketplace development, a large commercial development anchored by big box retailers Home Depot and Costco.

Photograph of the Price Candy Company building at 2 West 39th Street. circa 1981. The building was constructed in 1929 by W. R. Brovard to be a factory for Price Candy, and at the time of this photo was owned and partially occupied by the Foolkiller Theater company, which can be seen at the left. until they sold the building in 1985. The New Earth bookstore, a non-profit feminist store bookstore and event space, occupied the ground-floor corner space of the building.
