A promotional postcard put out by the American Sash & Door company about 1910 pictures a comfortable winter scene with a couple resting in a wing chair before a roaring fire. On the reverse side of the card is the legend: Your new home should reflect your individual taste. To this end we invite you to visit our Mantel, Tile and Grate Department. Largest stock and best values in the West. Estimates furnished. Complete catalog mailed upon request. Salesrooms Sixteenth & Bellefountaine Ave. American Sash & Door Co., Kansas City & St. Joseph, Missouri. Old city directories list the 64-year-old company at 16th & Bellefountaine from 1906 to 1960. From 1961 to 1970 it was located at 4621 East 75th Street Terrace. The company made individual moldings of wood for doors and windows, usually six to eight inches in width. Today there is no need for such companies since the modern moldings around windows and doors are a standard size, smaller and made at factories. According to Winthorp Williams, lumber yards today buy direct from the manufacturers and sell directly to the builder. The material comes in bundles. (Little cabinet shops can work up special orders when a particular wood or size is desired.) A one-cent stamp mailed the postcard to builders. Kansas City Times, January 2, 1987.
