Christmas 1937, Country Club Plaza, Kansas City, Mo. is the title of a promotional photographic night scene post card made by Jack Hinton and mailed with a 1-cent green postage stamp to Mrs. W. Houts, 44 E. Concord Avenue, Kansas City, Mo. The first Christmas lights at the Plaza were those put up in 1925 when there were only five buildings there. A string of colored lights was fastened over the door of one of the buildings, the Mill Creek Building by Charles Pitrat, who was a maintenance man for the buildings. By Christmas, 1930, all buildings and towers in the Plaza were being outlined with lights and there were many special electrical pieces, such as the great stars over Chandler's Landscaping and Floral Company (at left in the picture); Wolferman's Grocery at the right, and Edward Tanner's and the Boller Brothers' new Plaza Theater, which had won an award given by the Architectural League for best architectural design completed in Kansas City in 1928. Today's lights on the buildings of a changed and expanded Plaza require six months' time for installation and removal and about 45 miles of electric wire. Installation of wires is begun in September and they are not removed until spring. Kansas City Star, December 25, 1976.
