Photograph of a building at 523 Grand Avenue, the northeast corner of 5th and Grand, in the late 1980s. Built as institutional housing for the Helping Hand Institute in 1915, the structure was designed by architecture firm Smith, Rae and Lovitt. The organization provided food, employment, shelter, and other support for homeless men. It merged with Goodwill Industries in 1978, and the Grand Avenue building was sold in 1982. The photograph shows the building in a state of disrepair, with lower level windows and doors boarded up and upper level windows broken.
