A bit of history of early downtown Kansas City is recorded by an 1888 formal printed invitation to the opening of a new jewelry store, Jaccard's, at 815 Main Street. The invitation, composed in formal script and mailed in a cream-colored envelope with a blue one-cent stamp reads: The Jaccard Watch and Jewelry Co.of Kansas City, Mo.,extend a cordial invitation to Yourself and Ladies to be present at the opening of Their Elegant, New Jewelry Establishment, on Monday, Sept. 10th, 1888. 9 A.M. to 9 P.M. 815 Main St. The invitation was addressed to Miss Hattie Tomlison, Hotel Brunswick, Kansas City. Pictured today on the old postcard is Jaccard's second location in Kansas City at 1034 Main Street with the familiar sidewalk clock next door to John Taylor's Dry Goods Company. Postcards were not yet published nor were they legal in the United States when the Jaccard brothers, Eugene G.E. and Walter M. left their father's jewelry company in St. Louis, Mo., to establish the early store here.
