The nicely balanced picture of lade, fountain school and homes was taken in 1906 in a sparely inhabited neighborhood on the Paseo, looking north from Seventeenth street. Beyond the lake is Chace school, built in 1881 on the site of an earlier school, in the center of what was later the Paseo. The school was named for Charles A. Chace, school board member mayor of Kansas City in 1880, and a founder of Provident association. The lake was drained in 1907, and later filled and covered with shrubs and flowers by the park board. The school was razed in 1913. Today the support, approaches and exits of elevated I-70 dominate the scene, as it bridges the Paseo, and traffic races east and west.
