A 1918 postcard in color pictures The Scout, located on a high sightly spot in Kansas City's Penn Valley Park, overlooking the lake. The sculptor, Cyrus E. Dallin, of Boston and Paris, executed the piece for exhibition at the Panama-Pacific Exposition in San Francisco in 1915. On its way back east the statue was exhibited here, on a temporary basis, in Penn Valley Park. It so delighted the people of Kansas City that $15,000 was raised in small subscriptions to purchase it for the city. Indians and Western themes often were the subjects of Cyrus Dallin's work. The impressive 16-ft. tall bronze piece representing the watchful scout astride his horse was established as a memorial to local Indian tribes. The postcard featuring the statue was published by Max Bernstein. It was mailed from Kansas City with a red two-cent stamp by Chas to Jas. P. Way, Springfield, Vermont. Kansas City Times, August 28, 1987.
