The Cliffs in Swope Park, Kansas City, Mo. is the title of this springtime postcard scene, published in color in Leipzig, Germany, near the turn of the century. Pictured around the small stream, children wade and play unhampered and safe in a day when this was possible. Perhaps a mother was nearby with a picnic lunch. Perhaps not. Either way was all right then. Swope Park's great expanse and variety of terrain made a day's wandering a carefree joy, especially in spring. Kansas Citians were still bursting with pride over the generous 1896 gift of Thomas H. Swope and the fact that our city was now owner of the second largest city park in America - 1,334 acres of gentle meadows, picturesque hills, streams and forests. Kansas City Times, May 26, 1989.
