A 1909 photographic postcard in black and white shows Walnut Street near 12th, looking north. The street is crowded with horse and buggy traffic, four street cars, one identified as Prospect Avenue. Sidewalks are filled with shoppers, the ladies with big hats, long dark skirts and many with white shirtwaists, a popular style of the day.At the right side of the card, at the northeast corner of 12th and Walnut, the sign of McClintock's famous restaurant extends over the sidewalk. The three-story restaurant offered various kinds of food and service on the different floors; a glittering dining room with 400 ceiling lights and white linen tablecloths on one floor; more common food and lower prices on another, and on a lower floor quick service at a counter with long rows of stools. The cafeteria was advertised as the largest in the west and open all night. Across the street (at the left side of the card) the Boley building bears the sign of the Boley Clothing Co. The building (still standing) was designed by Louis S. Curtiss, and was erected in 1908-09. Extensive areas of glass made this an early example of the curtain wall on a large building.Midway in the block on the west side of the street over the sidewalk is a large sign advertising: Motion Pictures, Five Cents. A tall narrow two-story sign identifies the theater as the Majestic. In 1910 the Majestic Theater became the Globe Theater. This building was razed in April 1913 to make way for Kline's new clothing store for men and women. Popular for years, it too is gone today. The site now is under excavation for the American Telephone & Telegraph Co. building. The postcard, published by the North American Post Card Co., was mailed from Kansas City June 5, 1910 to Mrs. Laura T. Ellis of Darlington, Okla. Kansas City Times, December 14, 1984.
