Buster Brown has a hug for his little playmate, Mary Jane, on this Valentine post card. Mary Jane, in a black velvet dress, gloves, white fur hat, neckpiece and muff, wears a big smile, while Buster Brown's ever-faithful bulldog, Tige, has a look of surprise. The three comic strip figures were the work of an American artist, Richard Felton Outcault, creator of the first comic strip in America, and were popular with readers all over the world. The series first appeared in May, 1902, in the Pulitzer-owned New York World and through the years William Randolph Hearst of the New York American and Joseph Pulitzer vied for the creations of Outcault. The post card, in color, was one of a Buster Brown series and was published in 1907 by Raphael Tuck & Sons, art publishers to their majesties the King and Queen of England. Kansas City Star, February 14, 1976.
