Portrait of Willard John Humphreys, a member of the U.S. Marine Corps. Humphreys was born May 5, 1926, in Kansas City, Missouri. He attended Southwest High School, the New Mexico Military Academy, and Charleston College in Minnesota. He enlisted in the Marine Corps on March 25, 1944, and was sent to the Pacific on November 25, 1944. He was stationed on Guam until February 1945, and then stationed at Iwo Jima. While fighting at Iwo Jima on March 4, 1945, Humphreys was mortally wounded and died from his injuries on March 6, 1945. He was awarded the Purple Heart, a Presidential Unit Citation, and a World War II Victory Medal.
