Description

"Misfortune struck the congregation November 1, 1939, when its [the Linwood Christian Church's]. ..furnishings were destroyed by fire. Services were moved to the B'nai Jehudah synagogue, Linwood boulevard and Flora avenue and continued there several weeks, before another move was made to the Scottish Rite Temple, Linwood boulevard and the Paseo. Several opportunities for mergers with other congregations were offered, but the leaders decided to embark on a building project and the site at Forty-sixth and Main Streets was selected. Choice of a modernistic design for the new building was made by Frank Lloyd Wright, architect. ..and a campaign for funds was carried out. Leaders of the church hoped to dedicate the new building free of debt, but the financial campaign fell short of its goal. The building was erected, however, and a debt payment plan outlined."
