In a state of disrepair, it was closed by the school district in 1979 and placed for sale the following year. It operated as Brown-Caldwell Christian School from the early 1980s until circa 2007, when it was purchased, with the intention of residential redevelopment, by the Ivanhoe Neighborhood Association. It was damaged in an arson fire in December 2011, leading to its demolition.

The home was built in 1910 and became known as the Kersey Coates Reed Residence, for the Kansas City attorney and his bride, who were given the home in 1911 as a wedding gift by the bride's father, John G. Shedd, president of Chicago's Marshall Field & Co.
