Photograph of apartment buildings at the southeast corner of 40th and Walnut Streets, including Merton Hall at 101 East 40th Street, circa 1980. Merton Hall, and the Elmore Apartments building to the east, are eight-plex Kansas City Colonnade buildings, with columned porches at their fronts, built in the early 1920s. Merton Hall suffered a major fire in April 1983, and was torn down a week later. The others buildings in view in the image were later also demolished and the property used by the neighboring St. Paul's Episcopal Church as sports fields and gardens.

Photograph of a pillar, part of the Janssen Place Residential District Main Entrance Gateway at the intersection of Janssen Place and 36th Street. The gate was constructed in 1897. In 1975, the neighborhood was placed on the National Register of Historic Places as the Janssen Place Historic District and on the Kansas City Register of Historic Places in 1980.

Photograph of the Horace Mann School at 39th and Euclid Streets circa 1980. The building was designed by architect Charles A. Smith and completed in 1904. In a state of disrepair, it was closed by the school district in 1979 and placed for sale the following year. It operated as Brown-Caldwell Christian School from the early 1980s until circa 2007, when it was purchased, with the intention of residential redevelopment, by the Ivanhoe Neighborhood Association. It was damaged in an arson fire in December 2011, leading to its demolition.

The buildings, along with all other buildings on the block bound by 47th Street, 46th Terrace, Pennsylvania Avenue, and Broadway, were demolished to make way for the Valencia Place office building project, the groundbreaking for which took place in November 1997.

Both buildings were built circa 1850 and are among the oldest buildings in Kansas City. The Manor Bakery building is visible in the background of the image.

The New Stanley

Photograph of The New Stanley bar and restaurant at 501 Westport Road circa 1980, as well as a view of Pennsylvania Avenue looking southeast from Westport Road. The restaurant and bar opened in 1975 in the building that was the former Doerschuk pharmacy. An establishment called the Old Stanley opened in 1987 under new ownership in the space after the New Stanley closed in 1985.

Photograph of the Allen School at 706 West 42nd Street circa 1980. Founded in 1853, the school was the first public school in Westport and Kansas City, and pictured building was built in 1912. Renovations to turn the building into a community center focused on senior citizens began in 1980, and the space also provided offices for the ballet and several other organizations.

Photograph of 500 Knickerbocker Place, part of the Knickerbocker Apartments on the north side of Knickerbocker Place, circa 1981. The block of apartments were razed in 1982 for a Kansas City Life Insurance Company expansion project. The twin building on the south side of the street was still standing as of 2018. Both were built circa 1910 and designed by architect Leon Grant Middaugh.
