The First National Bank of Kansas City was started in 1886 by James Lewis Lombard and Colonel James L. Abernathy, and served Kansas City for over 100 years. This collection, donated by a former president of Bank of America’s Kansas City region, consists of business records of a long-standing Kansas City banking institution, as well as building records of the former First National Bank and current Kansas City Public Library Central Branch.

Description

James J. Akard was born July 7, 1838, in Polk County, Missouri. He was captain of Company A, Eighth Missouri State Militia Cavalry during the Civil War. After the war he was elected to the state legislature and held other important Polk County positions including sheriff, collector and clerk of the county court. He died in 1919.The collection includes official reports, general orders, court martial proceedings, photographs, correspondence, pension claims, and miscellaneous items. Much of the material in the collection relates to Company A, 8th Cavalry Regiment, Missouri State Militia.

The Kansas City Stockyards operated in the West Bottoms of Kansas City from 1871 to 1991. It was the second largest stockyards in the nation and one of Kansas City's most important industries. This collection documents the natural and built environment of the Kansas City Stockyards and West Bottoms from 1828-1983. It is a mostly oversized collection of blueprints, maps, architectural drawings, land abstracts, photos, and correspondence. James A. Hazlett was born in Kansas City on May 26, 1917, and died in the same city on September 14, 1997. He was employed by the Kansas City Missouri School District for many years as a teacher, principal, director of research, and finally as superintendent of schools from 1955-1969. The Hazlett papers include his personal files for the years 1929-1997 and consist of a variety of materials such as manuscripts, photographs, newspaper clippings, magazine articles, papers and speeches, correspondence, reports and testimonies, academic degree work, tape recordings, books, and various personal and ephemeral items. These papers include information pertinent to the study of the local educational community and the Kansas City School District, in particular the early history of desegregation efforts in the school system.

SC30-9 The Miracle Scrapbook Finding Aid

Description

"The Miracle," a religious pantomime based on a Christian legend, played in Kansas City from November 22, 1926, to December 11, 1926. The play was presented in Convention Hall which was transformed into a medieval cathedral. Many local people were utilized in the production, and approximately 88,000 people attended. The scrapbook contains primarily newspaper clippings that give thorough coverage to the stage production. The clippings feature advertisements, articles, reviews, feature stories, pictures, local business endorsements with ads, etc. The scrapbook has been photocopied and is available in that format.

It is believed that the three Myers brothers connected with this collection settled in Kansas. Luther Myers lived in Jackson County, Kansas, and was engaged in the banking business in Whiting. Louis Myers was an attorney in Valley Falls, Jefferson County, Kansas, and served in the Kansas State Legislature. Ireneus Myers appears to have lived in Grasshopper Falls, Kansas. Collection contains primarily correspondence between members of the Myers family written between the years 1858 to 1864. Writers and recipients include Martin Myers and his wife, sons Louis A. Myers, Luther M. Myers and wife Anna, and Ireneus Myers. The majority of the letters were written during the Civil War by both Louis and Ireneus who served in the Union Army. Both brothers as soldiers comment on participation in battles and skirmishes in West Virginia, Arkansas, and Missouri. These include the Battle of Bull Run, Cane Hill, White Sulpher Springs, etc. The life of a soldier is described including camp experiences and battle engagements.

Brookings Montgomery (1884-1963) was a local photographer who died in Kansas City at the age of 79. He owned and operated Montgomery Foto Service located at 1519 Wyandotte, Kansas City, Missouri. It is believed that these four boxes of correspondence files came with the Montgomery Photograph Collection purchased by the library in the 1960s. They have been retained in their original filing arrangement. Correspondence is from the 1940s-1960s and is arranged alphabetically by sender. The majority of the letters deal with the following subjects: circus, rodeo/wild west lore, and cowboys. Correspondents include descendants of Jesse James including Stella James, the wife of Jesse James II.

He worked for Harkins Commercial Photo Co. which he later purchased and renamed The Commerical Photo Co., Inc. This collection consists of eight pages of handwritten notes describing a survey for the demarcation of Indian reservations in what are now Doniphan, Atchison, and Leavenworth counties in northeastern Kansas. Notes include a brief description of the survey's purpose, Public Land Surveying System (PLSS) township-range-section location data, surveyors' measurements, and physical descriptions of the benchmarks, landmarks, and monuments used by the surveyor. James M. Greenwood was the leading educator in Kansas City for 40 years (1874-1914). In his tenure as superintendent of schools, he became recognized locally, nationally, and internationally. He was born in Illinois on November 15, 1837, and died at his desk on August 1, 1914. Greenwood's papers include correspondence primarily sent to Greenwood (1891-1917); reports and speeches (1906-1913); an unpublished manuscript on the history of Missouri; personal journals (1910, 1914); notebook kept by Mrs. Greenwood (1892-1896); and miscellaneous, primarily personal items. These papers cover the middle to late part of Mr. Greenwood's tenure as Superintendent of the Kansas City School District. A few published items are included but the bulk of the collection is handwritten or typewritten. Mr. Greenwood's interest in mathematics is evident as a subject of his speeches and outlines.

SC15-3 Cyrus F. Boyd Diary Finding Aid

Description

Boyd's three-volume diary details his Civil War experiences, with the last volume continuing for some years after the war. The first diary (July 2, 1862, to February 15, 1863) is of the 15th Iowa Infantry and references the Army of the Tennessee, Battle of Corinth, as well as other action in Tennessee and Mississippi. The second diary dates from February 16, 1863, to July 30, 1863, when Boyd was a first lieutenant in the 34th Iowa Infantry, Company B. Locations include Missouri, Louisiana, and Mississippi. The third diary dates from August 24, 1864, with October 1883 as the last entry date. Boyd is still a member of the 34th Iowa Infantry. Locations include Alabama, Louisiana, Arkansas, and Iowa. Items after the war entries include accounts of his life, mentioning his marriage, children, work, etc.
