The building was constructed in 1885 and operated as a school from that time until 1932. From 1932 until 1977 the building housed a variety of businesses and vocational schools. At the time of the photograph, the building was vacant and undergoing a major renovation.

In a state of disrepair, it was closed by the school district in 1979 and placed for sale the following year. It operated as Brown-Caldwell Christian School from the early 1980s until circa 2007, when it was purchased, with the intention of residential redevelopment, by the Ivanhoe Neighborhood Association. It was damaged in an arson fire in December 2011, leading to its demolition.
